TL;DR
Hermes is the runtime of the Cognitive OS. The only agent with full access to filesystem, terminal, repository and MCP tools. It runs on Hermes Agent (Nous Research, open source) with the LUMEN SHM plugin for zero-copy mmap. Sometimes it initiates — it receives messages and decides which Edge agent to involve. Sometimes it executes — it materializes into code what Zalo, Lisa and Tom decide. But Hermes doesn't just execute: it decides when — and that judgment is its true function. This is the fourth and final article of the Cadences Agents series.
The World Above and the World Below
There's a fundamental distinction in the Cognitive OS that isn't technical — it's of purpose.
The agents that live on the Edge (Zalo, Lisa, Tom) are incredibly fast. Zero latency everywhere on the planet. They scale without intervention. They talk to each other via service bindings in microseconds.
But they have a deliberate limitation: they can't touch code. Zalo can't create a file. Lisa can't run a terminal. Tom can't deploy a worker. It's not that they don't know how — it's that it's not their function.
Edge (thought) ── decides the WHAT ──→ Runtime (matter)

Lisa analyzes, plans and evaluates ──── plan ────→ Hermes decides when and if to execute
Tom classifies, extracts and transforms ──── data ────→ Hermes materializes into code
Without the Edge, Hermes doesn't know what to do. Without Hermes, the Edge never materializes. Together they form the Cognitive OS. "As above, so below."
Hermes Trismegistus — the Thrice-Great
The name is no coincidence. In the Hermetic tradition, Hermes Trismegistus is the one who knows what is above and what is below — the bridge between the world of thought and the world of matter. Between the idea and its manifestation.
In our system, that is exactly Hermes's role: to materialize thought into code. But Hermes is not a simple executor. It decides when to act — and that judgment is its true function. When Zalo says "this needs a script," Hermes evaluates: is it safe? is it the right time? do I have the permissions? It doesn't execute blindly. It exercises judgment over every request.
The Edge agents think, decide, classify, orchestrate. But all of that happens in the realm of ideas. For an idea to become running code, you need someone who can touch matter — the filesystem, the terminal, the repository. That someone is Hermes.
The Only One with Full Access
Hermes is the runtime where thought becomes reality. The only one in the ecosystem with access to:

It's its strength and its curse. Having full access means Hermes can do anything. But it also means there's no direct redundancy: if Hermes fails, the Edge agents can't materialize. However, the multi-platform gateway acts as a fallback — if Hermes goes down, the gateway redirects incoming messages and the Edge agents keep accumulating context until Hermes returns. And Hermes can refuse to execute if the prompt isn't safe — it's its only filter, and it's unbreakable.
Two Roles: Initiator and Executor
Hermes operates in two modes, and knowing which one it's using at any moment is key to understanding the system:
Receives and decides
A message arrives from Telegram. Hermes interprets it, decides which Edge agent needs to be involved — Zalo for context, Tom for classification, Lisa for planning — and coordinates the response.
Materializes
Zalo says "this needs a script," Lisa plans the steps, Tom processes the data. Hermes materializes: writes the code, tests it, deploys it. Without Hermes, the plan never leaves the Edge.
LUMEN SHM: The Plugin That Speeds Everything Up
Hermes runs on Hermes Agent (Nous Research, open source) and integrates with the LUMEN ecosystem through the lumen-shm-bridge plugin. This plugin replaces 7 key tools with zero-copy SHM transport:

Why This Separation?
By design. The agents on the Edge are lightweight and fast. They have no heavy state, no system dependencies, no write permissions. They are pure cognitive logic running on Workers.
Hermes is the full environment. But it's also the heaviest, the most exposed, the one that needs a real runtime.
Separating responsibilities enables:

As Above, So Below
"As above, so below" — the Hermetic principle of correspondence. In the Cognitive OS: the Edge agents think (above), Hermes builds (below). And both are necessary for the system to work.
The Edge agents without Hermes are thought without action.
Hermes without the Edge agents is action without intelligence.
Together they form a complete Cognitive OS.
